Borders Talking Newspaper

The Borders Talking Newspaper Association is a fully recognised Scottish Charity (no SC 020192) and part of both Scottish and UK-wide Talking Newspaper networks.

Talking Newspapers are totally reliant on the generosity of their supporters to keep the service going and volunteers to keep producing the newspaper.

The Borders Talking Newspaper is a free local weekly news and information service for anyone who cannot see to read or cannot hold our local newspapers. News items are chosen from two of our local weekly newspapers, the Southern Reporter and Berwickshire News. We are working with the Rotary Club of Hawick to set up a branch to record the Hawick News for inclusion in our weekly programme.

We produce a weekly 90 minute audio-news programme that is sent free to listeners and streamed worldwide over the internet although our primary aim is to serve the needs of people within our local community. If you would like to be added to our mailing list do contact us by email, telephone or letter.

As a form of quality assurance there is always at least one listener on our committee who provides valuable feedback. To improve the quality of the output we now record digitally and as audio tapes become more difficult to source and cassette tape decks less popular, we provide the newspaper on data sticks which can be played either through a computer or special players (which we also provide). We aim to gradually end the production of tapes over the next year so that all listeners can benefit from the higher quality.

Borders Talking Newspaper also offers a service recording leaflets, brochures, policies or any other documents at a very reasonable cost. This service assists organisations to meet their responsibilities to people with sight impairment under the terms of the Disability Discrimination Act.
