The family first appears in the Duns area in 1696, when the Earl of Tweeddale bought Duns Castle for his son, William Hay of Drumelzier.
The family would appear to originate as a Saxon family who lived in Northumbria, in the days when Northumbria stretched all the way north to Edinburgh.
Soon after the Norman invasion of England, the Cospatricks, forbears of the Homes, moved into the area, from across the border, where they had been the Saxon Earls of Northumbria.
